The College has given recognition to following classes of membership:

1. MEMBERS

i) Active Members

An Active member shall:

(a) Be the holder of:

(i) the relevant degree qualification of the Fiji School of Medicine and has served and completed the required period of internship; OR

(ii) Relevant degree qualification from any recognised institution and has completed a required term of internship in the hospitals in Fiji or overseas.

(b) Be fully registered medical practitioners engaged in general practice for a minimum period of three years;

(c) Ideally have completed special vocational training for general practice, the length and extent of which shall comply with the requirements of the College Council as defined from time to time.

(d) Satisfy the Board of Censors by such examination as the College Council shall determine; the Board of Censors shall make appropriate recommendation to the Council, which is responsible for the final decision.

(e) Practice within the object of the College provided that in rare and exceptional cases some or all of the foregoing requirement (a) – (d), the College Council may waive.

(f) Or has demonstrated a level of knowledge, skill and competence, acceptable to or approved by the Board of Censors, that qualifies the person in the opinion of the Board of Censor to carry out an expanded medical care role which recognizes the persons enhanced capacity, knowledge, skill and expertise to make independent and collaborative clinical and public health judgments

(g) Pay annual dues.

(h) Be entitled to the privilege of the floor at General Meetings, may vote and may hold office.

(i) Be designated “Member of Fiji College of General Practitioners (abbreviated MFCGP).

(j) Agree to undertake and furnish proof of any postgraduate education requirement, which may be required by the Council for continuing membership.

(k) Continue to attain no less then 50 Medical Education/Professional Development points per annum to continue membership status once such is granted.

ii) Associate members

Following qualifications are required for an Associate Membership of the College: -­‐

(a) The members who have joined general practice recently and were in the vocation for less than three (3) years.
(b) Be fully registered medical practitioners with Fiji Medical Council.
(c) The members will pay necessary annual membership fees as determined by the Annual General Meeting of the College from time to time.
(d) The members will have full voting rights at the Annual General Meetings, Special General Meetings and Extra Ordinary General Meetings of the College.
(e) The members can hold office in the Council of the College except of the President, Vice-­‐ President, Secretary and the Treasurer.
(f) The members should apply to the Council for registration with the College by furnishing following relevant documents:-­‐
(i) Certified copies of Degrees and Diplomas awarded by the recognized Universities or institutions.
(ii) Certified copy of Registration with the Fiji Medical Council.
(iii) Certified copy of birth certificate.
(iv) Names of two referees, one of whom shall be a Fellow of the College.
(g) The member shall practice within the objectives of the College.
(h) The Censor-­‐in-­‐Chief with concurrence of the Board of Censor shall approve or reject the membership or call for more information from the intending member.
(i) The members will not be entitled to the use of “Member of the College of General Practitioners” (Abbreviated MFCGP)
(j) Must continue to attain no less then 50 Medical Education/Professional Development points per annum to continue membership status once such is granted

iii) Provisional Members Provisional Members shall:-­‐
(a) Be fully registered as a General Practitioner with the Fiji Medical Council OR employed in the Ministry of Health in a Medical Officer capacity at the Sub-­‐divisional and Health Center Level
(b) Have an appropriate Work Permit if the member is from an overseas country
(c) Have paid the annual dues
(d) Be entitled to the privilege of the floor at the Annual General Meeting, may vote and may hold office
(e) Agree to undertake and furnish proof of any postgraduate education requirement which may be required by the Council for continuing membership
(f) Practice within the objectives of the College
(g) Continue to attain no less then 50 Medical Education/Professional Development points per annum to continue membership status once such is granted

iv) Retired Members
(a) Retired membership shall be granted to all members who are no longer actively engaged in professional activities.
(b) Retired members shall not be required to give evidence of postgraduate study.
(c) Retired members shall have full privileges of membership.
(d) Retired members shall pay reduced annual dues as determined from time to time by the Council.

v) Life Members
(a) Life membership shall be granted automatically to all Members except Honorary members on attaining the age of sixty-­‐five years.
(b) Life Members shall not be required to give evidence of postgraduate studies.
(c) Life Members shall have full privileges of Membership.
(d) Life members shall not pay annual dues.

vi) Honorary Members.
(a) Honorary membership may be conferred by the Council on individuals of distinction who have made an outstanding contribution to the cause of the general practice or to the medical profession in general, and who need not be graduates of medicine.
(b) Honorary Members may be proposed by the Council or by a Faculty.
(c) Honorary members who are not already Members of the College shall be entitled to the privileges of the floor of General Meetings but shall not be entitled to vote or to hold office. ?
(d) Honorary Members shall not pay annual dues.

vii) Temporary Members Temporary members may be awarded accreditation -­‐
(a) on an annual basis
(b) to practice of Primary Health care/ medicine but restricted to those who are registered under Part I of the Act (c) to medical practitioners registered under Part II of the Act and are practicing Primary Healthcare/ Family Medicine for a restricted period of time.
(d) And must continue to attain no less then 50 Medical Education/Professional Development points per annum to continue membership status once such is granted

2. FELLOWS

(a) The Fellowship (F.F.C.G.P) may be awarded for meritorious service either to:
(i) the science or practice of medicine OR
(ii) the aims or the work of the College

(b) A Fellowship may be awarded to a candidate who must have been in full-­‐time general practice for a minimum period of 5 years and
(i) Has been a financial member of the College for the past 5 years and has been
(ii) paying subscriptions annually.
(iii) Is an active Full Member of the College. (iv) Has passed the post-­‐graduate Diploma in Family Medicine from Monash University or an equivalent qualification after examination/assessment by the Censor Board of the Fiji College of General Practitioners.
(v) Has documented evidence of having obtained a minimal of 50 CME points awarded by the College on an annual basis for the past 3 years.
(vi) Is sponsored by a Fellow of the College and elected to Fellowship by a majority vote of the Council of Censor/Executive Board.
(vii) Will uphold the aims and objectives of the College and to commit himself/herself to a process of continuous medical education by playing an active role in the College educational programmes to the best of his/her ability.

(c) A Candidate must be willing to accept nomination of Fellowship and complete and sign the nomination Forms.

(d) A Fellow shall be designated “Fellow of the Fiji College of General Practitioners” (abbreviated F.F.C.G.P)

(e) Fellowship may be awarded posthumously if nomination procedures were commenced during the nominee’s lifetime.
